Summary
The narrative centres on Catherine Langford, who in 1938 becomes involved in the first human encounter with the Stargate. After Nazi occultist Wilhelm Brücke seizes the Langfords at a Giza warehouse and forces Professor Paul Langford through the gate, Catherine escapes and follows with Captain James Beal and Wasif. The group arrives on Abydos, ruled by Aset, a rebel subordinate of Ra. Brücke attempts to forge an alliance with Aset, offering human captives in exchange for Naquadah, while Catherine seeks the symbols needed to reactivate the gate.
Aset ultimately rejects Brücke’s plan; Brücke is killed, and Aset erases the memories of Catherine and her father. Ra arrives in response to Aset’s defiance, destroys her temple, and captures or brainwashes several members of the expedition. Beal succeeds in sending Catherine and Professor Langford back to Earth, where they resume their work with no recollection of their off‑world experiences. The Stargate is subsequently taken into U.S. custody, leaving Catherine with only a fragment of unusual metal and an unresolved connection to the artefact.
