Summary
The Tomorrow People are depicted as fully telepathic humans who possess telekinetic abilities and the capacity for instantaneous teleportation, a process referred to as jaunting. Operating from a concealed base known as the Lab, situated off a disused branch of the London Underground, they monitor the emergence of new members and employ their abilities to protect humanity from a range of extra-terrestrial threats. Their activities are supported by TIM, a sentient biotronic computer, and by several human allies, including Ginge and Lefty, two leather‑jacketed motorcyclists who become recurring associates.
The series establishes that the Tomorrow People were not always Homo superior. All members begin life as ordinary Homo sapiens, colloquially termed Saps, and undergo a transformative process known as breaking out when their advanced abilities manifest. The narrative suggests that any individual might be a latent Tomorrow Person awaiting this evolutionary transition. Across the first eight seasons, various members join and depart; those who leave are typically explained as having been selected to represent Earth on the Galactic Trig, a vast interstellar complex staffed by highly advanced beings from across the universe.
John serves as the group’s leader and is the only member to remain throughout the entire run of the series. Elizabeth, portrayed by actress Elizabeth Adare, joins in the second season and continues until the programme’s conclusion. Other long‑serving members include Stephen, who appears for four seasons, and Mike, who remains for five seasons and is played by actor and singer Mike Holoway of the pop group Flintlock.
