Summary
Captain Jack Harkness, a former Time Agent and accomplished con man from the fifty‑first century, previously seen travelling with the Doctor in Doctor Who (2005), arrives in early twenty‑first‑century Cardiff. There he becomes affiliated with the Torchwood Institute, an independent organisation originally established by Queen Victoria to investigate and combat hostile extra-terrestrial and supernatural phenomena.
During an inquiry into a murder, the Torchwood team employs an alien artefact, a glove capable of temporarily reviving the dead. Unbeknown to them, their activities have been observed by Gwen Harper, a police officer who has noticed unusual occurrences surrounding the group. Her curiosity leads her to investigate further, eventually locating Torchwood’s headquarters and uncovering the nature of its operations. Jack recognises that the team has grown detached from ordinary human experience, and he invites Gwen to join them, believing that her perspective will restore an essential sense of humanity to their work.
