Summary

A fleet of fifty immense, saucer‑shaped alien motherships arrives in Earth’s orbit, positioning themselves above major cities across the globe. The beings aboard these vessels reveal themselves atop the United Nations headquarters in New York City, presenting a humanoid appearance distinguished by their need for protective eyewear and a characteristic resonance in their speech. Identified as the Visitors, they declare a peaceful intent and request assistance in acquiring specific chemicals and minerals required to sustain their home world, described as a planet orbiting the star Sirius. In exchange, they pledge to share their advanced technological capabilities with humanity. Earth’s governments accept the proposal, enabling the Visitors, led by their commander John and his deputy Diana, to establish significant influence within human political and administrative structures.

As their presence becomes more deeply embedded, a series of disquieting developments emerges. Scientists increasingly find themselves the targets of public suspicion and hostile media coverage. Governmental restrictions begin to curtail their professional activities and personal movements. Individuals who attempt to scrutinise the Visitors more closely either vanish under unexplained circumstances or suffer reputational damage. Prominent researchers publicly confess to subversive behaviour, and some display abrupt, anomalous changes, such as adopting a hand preference opposite to their long‑established norm, suggesting coercion or manipulation.

V was conceived as an explicit allegory for the dangers of totalitarianism. The Visitors were portrayed as interstellar analogues to Nazi Germany, complete with militaristic uniforms, stylised insignia, and a pervasive propaganda apparatus. Their occupation strategy included the systematic detention of scientists in concentration‑camp‑like facilities, the establishment of a brown‑shirt‑style Visitor Youth organisation, and the takeover of mass‑media channels to control public perception. The series underscored its thematic parallels by introducing an elderly Jewish character who directly compared the Visitors’ rise to the ascent of the Nazi regime.
