Summary
Flash Gordon, Dr. Zarkov, and Dale Arden, accompanied by reporter Happy Hapgood, launch into space to investigate a destructive beam destabilising Earth’s atmosphere. Although they suspect the planet Mongo, they soon discover the ray originates from Mars.
On the Red Planet, they find Ming the Merciless alive and in alliance with Azura, the Witch Queen of Mars. From her stronghold, Ming operates a Nitron ray that is stripping Earth’s atmosphere. Azura wields the power to transform victims into living clay, forcing them to exist in lightless caverns. The Clay People, led by their king, know how to neutralise her magic but cannot escape their subterranean prison.
Initially mistrusted and briefly taken hostage, Flash and his companions ultimately form an alliance with the Clay People. Together, they confront Azura’s sorcery, Ming’s advanced weaponry, hostile Martian factions, and other dangers across the planet. Flash eventually exposes Ming’s plot to overthrow Azura, turning her against him.
Azura breaks her pact with Ming and dies in the ensuing conflict, freeing the Clay People from their curse. Ming’s Nitron ray is destroyed, his escape routes cut off by Martian forces, and he is seemingly defeated by the consequences of his own treachery.
