Summary
Nicholas Orton (portrayed by Thomas Gibson) is an American businessman who has resided in China for several years. His life is disrupted when he encounters a mysterious Chinese woman (played by Bai Ling) who informs him that he alone can prevent the world from regressing five hundred years into the past. Orton dismisses her claim until contemporary buildings begin vanishing before his eyes. The woman, later revealed to be Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, transports him to a portal that grants access, through the teachings of Confucius (Ric Young), to the ancient Chinese underworld.
Upon crossing the portal, Orton, soon designated The Scholar From Above, discovers that his knowledge of Confucian philosophy is essential for the challenges ahead. His first task is to free Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, from the mountain where he has been imprisoned for centuries. Wukong accompanies Orton on a mission to prevent the retroactive destruction of the original manuscript of Journey to the West; should the text be erased from history, its moral influence would disappear, altering human civilisation for the worse. As the quest progresses, Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) and Sha Wujing (Friar Sand) join the undertaking, forming a group dedicated to preserving the integrity of the legendary narrative.
