Summary
The narrative adopts elements reminiscent of mid‑century aviation disaster films, though the crisis confronting the aircraft is not mechanical failure or terrorism but a temporal anomaly. During a red‑eye flight from Los Angeles to Boston, ten passengers awaken to discover that the remainder of the travellers, along with the flight crew, have inexplicably vanished. Only those who had been asleep remain aboard.
The aircraft continues on autopilot, and one of the surviving passengers, himself a trained pilot, is able to land the plane safely. Their predicament, however, is far from resolved. The group soon realises that they have passed through a rupture in time and emerged into an earlier temporal layer that exists only as an inert, incomplete facsimile of reality. The airport is deserted, food lacks flavour, and even beverages have lost their effervescence. A steadily approaching, ominous sound signals the arrival of the Langoliers, malevolent entities that consume the remnants of expired moments in time.
Recognising the danger, the stranded passengers conclude that their sole chance of survival is to retrace their original flightpath and attempt to re‑enter the time‑rip. Their efforts to take off before the Langoliers reach them form the central tension of the story’s climax.
