Summary
This ambitious miniseries, adapted by Stephen King from his own expansive novel, depicts a group of survivors who endure a catastrophic pandemic that eradicates the majority of the global population. In the aftermath, the remaining men and women are drawn into an ideological and supernatural conflict, ultimately compelled to make a final stand against a malevolent, quasi‑satanic figure.
Although primarily a work of dark fantasy, the narrative incorporates science‑fiction elements in its initial premise. The plague originates with a highly virulent, flu‑like biological agent, nicknamed Captain Trips, that escapes from a classified government testing facility in the California desert. An infected soldier flees the installation with his family, inadvertently transporting the pathogen across the United States and triggering a nationwide collapse. As the contagion spreads unchecked, civilisation disintegrates, fulfilling the story’s bleak observation that the world ends not with a dramatic cataclysm, but with the quiet inevitability of a single fatal infection.
